Southampton defender Sam McQueen is being lined up to replace Aston Villa-bound Joe Bryan at Bristol City after talks over a last-gasp deal began, Football Insider sources understands.
McQueen has emerged as the Championship club’s top target to fill the void left by Bryan’s departure with Robins boss Lee Johnson a big admirer of the player.
A well placed source has told Football Insider that discussions have begun over a late-window transfer.
Bristol City are searching for a new left-back with Bryan on the verge of joining Championship rivals Villa after he was given the all-clear to undergo a medical on Tuesday night.
McQueen has come through the ranks at Southampton and is under contract at St Mary’s until 2021.
The 23-year-old started only two games last season in all competitions last season with Ryan Bertrand the first-choice left-back at St Mary’s.
The return of Matt Targett following a successful spell on loan at Fulham last season could also push McQueen further down the pecking order at Southampton ahead of the new season.
Bristol City are hoping to land McQueen on loan as they look to strengthen their squad before the close of the transfer window.
In other Aston Villa news, Football Insider can reveal Steve Bruce’s side are on the verge of another huge transfer splash that will transform their team this season.
