West Brom have fended off a late Aston Villa hijack to agree the club-record signing of Grady Diangana from West Ham as he heads in for a medical this morning, Football Insider understands.
The Premier League new boys’ bid of £12million rising to £18m with add-ons was accepted by the Londoners but Villa moved to match the offer in a stunning ambush.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that West Brom are confident of finalising the transfer today ahead of their rivals.
Diangana has been granted permission by West Ham to travel to West Brom this morning and undergo a medical and finalise the terms of what is a blockbuster deal.
The winger is in line to become the Baggies’ record purchase, if all performance-related add-ons are met.
The deal would exceed the £15m spent to lure striker Salomón Rondón from Zenit St Petersburg in the summer of 2015.
The winger wants to be playing regular first-team football next season and has made clear he is willing to leave his boyhood club to achieve that.
It is a deal that has left West Ham fans already frustrated at their club’s lack of summer transfer activity absolutely furious.
The wide man was a big success at West Brom in their successful Championship promotion campaign last season, contributing eight goals and seven assists in 31 appearances in all competitons.
Operating mainly on the left flank, he also has 21 first-team appearances for West Ham under his belt.
