Arsenal have agreed to sign Hertha Berlin rising star Omar Rekik – and he has already passed a medical.
An Arsenal source has told Football Insider that the 19-year-old will become the club’s first signing of what is expected to be a busy January transfer window.
Rekik has already completed a medical with the Premier League giants and the formalities of the deal are now being finalised.
This comes after Hertha Berlin accepted a bid of around £540,000 for the highly rated teenage centre-back.
The Arsenal recruitment team had tried to sign Rekik last summer but could not agree the terms of the deal.
The club’s plan is for the youngster to train with their first-team squad but initially play for the Under-23s.
That will enable him to gain some important experience before being part of the senior side.
Arsenal academy chief Per Mertesacker is believed to have played a key role in bringing Rekik to north London through his contacts in Germany.
There are high hopes for Tunisia-born Rekik, who represented Holland at Under-18 level before switching to the Tunisia Under-21 side.
He has already spent two years in England between 2014 and 2016, when he played for Manchester City’s academy.
After making the move from Feyenoord in 2012, he then moved back to Holland with PSV Eindhoven.
Rekik then joined Marseille in 2017 before eventually signing for Hertha, where he hoped to play for the first team before the departure of his brother, Karim Rekik, who joined Sevilla this summer.
The youngster has yet to make his senior debut for the German club but has been a central figure for their age-group sides.
