RB Leipzig winger Ademola Lookman is set to undergo a Newcastle United medical by the end of the week, Football Insider can reveal.

The north-east giants have made a breakthrough in talks to lure the 22-year-old back to England following talks this week.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider the club are hopeful Lookman will fly in to for a medical this weekend before putting pen to paper on a loan-to-buy deal.

The deal is set to be a loan for the remainder of the campaign and include an option-to-buy clause that will come into effect this summer.

It is regarded as a major coup by the United hierarchy, who have demonstrated a greater willingness over the last 12 months to fund big-money transfers.

Attacking trio Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximian and record signing Joelinton have all arrived for £15million-plus fees.

Lookman is set to return to England only six months after joining Leipzig from Everton for £22million.

He made a big impact for the German club initially while on loan in the second half of the 2018-19 campaign, when he scored five goals and provided four assists in just 11 Bundesliga matches.

He has not fared so well under new manager Julian Nagelsmann for the Bundesliga leaders and has made just four appearances this season.

Steve Bruce has made it clear he wants reinforcements this month even though Newcastle have overcome a sticky start to the campaign to climb to 13th in the Premier League table.
