Medical today: Everton agree to sign Townsend after Palace exit

Andros Townsend is undergoing a medical at Everton today, Football Insider has learned.

The 30-year-old is a free agent after his contract at Crystal Palace expired at the end of last month.

An Everton source has told Football Insider that Townsend has agreed terms and is completing a free transfer today.

The winger is undergoing medical tests before putting pen to paper on a contract at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are keen to bolster their right-wing options in this transfer window and see Townsend as low-risk signing.

Townsend has worked with newly-appointed Everton boss Rafael Benitez previously.

He excelled under his management at Newcastle United in the second half of the 2015-16 campaign and contributed four goals and two assists in 13 appearances.

The 13-times England international is one of a number of senior players who have been released by Palace this summer in an overhaul at Selhurst Park.

His 185 career appearances for the Eagles yielded 16 goals and 28 assists, including a sensational strike away at Man City which won the 2018-19 goal of the season.

A product of Tottenham’s academy, the left-footer has also enjoyed spells at Leeds, Ipswich Town, Birmingham City and QPR in his career.

Townsend is expected to be one of a number of signings announced at Goodison Park this week.

The Toffees have also agreed a deal to sign experienced shot-stopper Asmir Begovic to provide cover for Jordan Pickford next season.
