Medical underway: Newcastle grant permission for £40,000-a-week player to quit - sources
EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke
Newcastle defender Grant Hanley is undergoing a Norwich City medical after being granted permission to quit, Football Insider sources understand.
Hanley is well down the pecking order at Newcastle despite signing a £40,000-a-week contract last summer and Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has given the green light for him to leave as he aims to raise funds for his own transfer plans.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the centre-back, 25, is undergoing a medical at Carrow Road on Tuesday afternoon after being given permission to hold talks with the Championship club.
Scotland international Hanley has not featured in the Premier League for Newcastle so far this season with his only appearance coming in the League Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Hanley joined Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers last summer, but he has struggled to establish himself in Benitez’s plans, making just 17 appearances in total for the club.

A number of clubs have been linked with a move for Hanley, but Norwich are now set to bring the central defender to Carrow Road.
Norwich have conceded four goals in each of their last two Championship games against Aston Villa and Millwall and they are desperate to bolster their defensive options.
Canaries manager Daniel Farke is looking to bring in some proven players to strengthen his side after a difficult start to the season.
In other Newcastle news, the Magpies are in talks to sign an Argentina international.
