Chelsea defender Dujon Sterling is undergoing a medical at Wigan ahead of a season-long loan move to the Championship club, Football Insider understands.

Wigan are in the market for a new right-back to replace Reece James after the Chelsea defender's successful loan spell at the club last season and they have returned to Stamford Bridge to agree a deal for Sterling.

A Latics source has told Football Insider that the terms of the deal are agreed and it is expected to be finalised in the next 24 hours.

It is a major coup for Wigan as Sterling came close to making a cross-London move to Queens Park Rangers earlier in the summer window.

Sterling, 19, spent last season on loan at League One side Coventry, where he made 40 appearances in all competitions.

Chelsea are happy to send the teenager out on loan again so that he can continue his development with valuable first-team action at an even higher level.

Wigan hope Sterling can make as big an impact in the upcoming campaign as James did last season.
