Former Arsenal star and current Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has claimed that the Gunners’ Mesut Ozil is better than every single one of the players at north London rivals Tottenham.
The German international has been with Arsene Wenger’s side since joining from Real Madrid back in 2013, with the 29-year-old establishing himself as a key member of the squad, despite much criticism over his work ethic from fans and pundits alike.
He impressed with his performance against Spurs in their 2-0 derby win on Saturday, his 171st outing for the club, and Merson has now claimed he is a better player than any of the Lilywhites’ own stars, comparing him to fellow attacking midfielder Dele Alli.
He told Sky Sports’ The Debate (21/11) programme: “You see it the other day, Ozil is head and shoulders above all of the Tottenham players.
“On his day he’s better than all of them.
“If Dele Alli had his best ever game and Ozil plays his best ever game you take Ozil all day long, you would.”
Merson’s verdict will be questioned by many considering the impressive performances Spurs have shown this season, Alli himself netting twice to help see of reigning Champions League champions Real Madrid 3-1 at Wembley in their group stage clash.
The 21-year-old also finished last season as the top scoring midfielder in the Premier League, netting 18 times to finish ahead of the likes of Eden Hazard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the top scorers’ table.
This season has seen Ozil notch up one goal and three assists in his ten outings in the Premier League, while Alli has three goals and one assist.
Meanwhile fellow Spurs star Harry Kane has picked up two successive top flight golden boot awards, continuing his fine form into the current campaign with eight goals in 11 league games.
In other Tottenham news, the club have jetted out on a European transfer mission.
