Paul Merson believes that Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t helped Tottenham’s recent problems in the league as he sent out the wrong message during the Arsenal game.
In his predictions for Sky Sports, the pundit revealed that he believes by subbing Harry Kane and Dele Alli, to save them for the Champions League, the Spurs boss sent out the message that Tottenham couldn’t win the league.
“I don’t think Mauricio Pochettino has helped,” admitted the 49-year-old.
“In the north London derby, they were still in the game against Arsenal but he takes off Dele Alli and Harry Kane ahead of the Champions League match; that sends out a message that they can’t win the league.”
The Sky Sports pundit continued insisting that Spurs “need to make top four”, before backing them to beat Watford 3-1 at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
The 49-year-old also added that he believes Tottenham have lost a bit of “focus” and that they’re clearly missing Toby Alderweireld, who the pundit thinks is “the best centre-back in the world.”
Spurs have not won any of their last three league games as they lost 2-0 to Arsenal, drew 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion and then lost to Leicester City 2-1 on Tuesday.
The poor run of form has seen them drop to seventh in the Premier League, four points behind fourth placed Arsenal and 16 points less than undefeated league leaders Manchester City.
Watford go into the clash with Tottenham, just three points behind them in eighth, but know only an emphatic win would see them leapfrog Spurs.
In other Tottenham news, this star figure is being lined up to replace a former Premier League icon at there European giants.
