Michael Carrick to demand ‘double his money’ as agent lines up new Man United deal

Michael Carrick could look to agree a new contract next summer if he delivers what is required during his first season as Manchester United manager.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who believes Man United are only “partly” backing Carrick with a two-year deal.

Man United have agreed a two-year deal to appoint Carrick as their next permanent boss, with an announcement imminently expected.

Carrick has impressed Man United chiefs after ensuring the club qualified for next season’s Champions League with a third-place Premier League finish.

A big summer awaits Carrick as Man United manager, with the club looking to strengthen their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.

Michael Carrick’s agent will be ‘lining up’ new contract next summer

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has been impressed with Carrick’s spell in interim charge.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Carrick will have the power to demand a better contract next summer if he has a successful first season at Old Trafford.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It seems to me that Man United believe in Carrick now, but only partly.

“I’m afraid that’s not the way to really back a manager, and you’ve got to decide if he is or not. Carrick’s shown that he’s calmed things down. He’s got the squad working. He may not be the best public speaker, but nevertheless, he has done it in the dressing room, and he’s got that confidence and calmed everything down.

“He’s also shown me that he’s taken a big interest in the academy and that’s a key thing for United. And the fans are on board with him. So, it’s set and Carrick won’t forget that he could have got more than this at the time.

“If Man United do well next season, Carrick will be knocking on their door saying, I want double the money and triple the years. Carrick’s agent will be lining them up.

“He’s got the experience from Middlesbrough which people shouldn’t forget. He did a decent job up there for a long period of time, and Carrick’s the best thing that Man United have got going for them.”

Which Real Madrid star could Michael Carrick bring to Man United?

Man United are drawing up their list of transfer targets, with a new midfielder seen as a priority with Casemiro departing at the end of the season.

Former chief scout at Old Trafford Mick Brown told Football Insider that Man United are on alert over the availability of Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga.

The 23-year-old could consider leaving Real Madrid after only starting 16 La Liga games this season, and missing out on France’s World Cup squad.

Man United will not be the only club interested in the Frenchman, with Tottenham likely to be in the race for his signature should they remain a Premier League club.
