Michael Carrick ‘working personally’ with Benjamin Sesko one-on-one in Man United training

Manchester United’s interim manager Michael Carrick is feeling the benefits of working one-on-one with Benjamin Sesko.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, amid Sesko’s resurgence under Carrick.

The striker was signed under Ruben Amorim last summer in a deal worth up to £74million, but he struggled for form until Carrick’s arrival in January.

The 22-year-old has now scored seven Premier League goals since Carrick was appointed interim boss, helping the Red Devils secure a Champions League place.

Man United are on a three-game winning streak, with Sesko having started all those matches, and Carrick’s side could wrap up third spot if they beat Sunderland next in the Premier League.

Michael Carrick ‘has an arm around Benjamin Sesko’s shoulders’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Sesko could become a “major player” for Man United next season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks that Carrick should be praised for getting the best out of Sesko.

Benjamin Sesko’s 2025-26 Premier League stats for Manchester United.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Sesko’s a young player, and he took time to settle in the Premier League.

“From what I’m hearing, Carrick has taken a lot of time after training to work with him personally and some of the other staff as well. He feels like he’s got an arm around his shoulders. He’s got belief and we all know strikers play on confidence.

“Sesko is starting to reap the benefits, and it’s looking like he could come in to be a major player for next season. With a good pre-season behind him as well, he’s got the talents. He’s got an eye for goal, he’s finishing well and he believes now.

“With Carrick, he’s got that confidence, and that exudes into the squad when you’ve got a striker in form like that, and finally they got one right.

“Everybody’s expecting instant goals all over the place, but it does take time with younger players. This is another case, but Carrick seems to have got the best out of him, so good luck to him.”

Man United in transfer race for Tottenham star

Former chief scout at Old Trafford Mick Brown has told Football Insider that Man United are in pursuit of Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven.

Van de Ven is likely to force a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer in search of European football.

The 25-year-old will not be short of offers this summer, and Man United want a reliable centre-back to join their ranks amid concerns over Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutchman’s contract does not expire at Spurs until 2029, but relegation to the Championship could force the club into a sale.
