Mick Quinn: This is the type of player Newcastle must sign in the summer

By Danny Wright

Mick Quinn believes that Newcastle must sign players that have an abundance of experience and pace in the summer.

The former Magpies striker also says that owner Mike Ashley has to provide Rafa Benitez with the transfer funds to bring in Premier League quality players.

Newcastle sealed their promotion to the top-flight last week and could still lift the Championship title after their season-ending game against Barnsley on Sunday.

Despite Benitez’s side enjoying a rather straightforward time in the second-tier, Quinn thinks there is still some major work to be done on the squad when the transfer window opens.

“We all know – supporters and everyone at the club – that Rafa needs backing this summer,” wrote the 54-year-old in his column on the Newcastle Chronicle website.

“Ashley needs to stick his hand in his pocket and give Rafa free rein to spend on however many Premier League-quality players he thinks the club need this summer.

“That side needs experience, it needs pace.”

Quinn spent three years as a player at St. James’ Park, scoring 57 goals in 106 league appearances.

The Liverpool-born striker scored four goals on his Newcastle debut in a 5-2 win over Leeds in 1989.

His career also saw him play for Wigan, Portsmouth, Coventry and Watford before retiring in 1996 with Greek club PAOK.

Benitez’s side can win the Championship title if they better Brighton’s result on Sunday as they travel to Aston Villa for their final game.

Newcastle secured a top-two spot with a 4-1 win over Preston last Monday, before closing the gap on the league-leading Gulls down to one point with a 2-0 win at Cardiff on Friday.

In other Newcastle news, Benitez’s top summer target is set to be offered a new contract at his club.
