Middlesbrough icon Bernie Slaven has slammed Leeds United director of football Victor Orta ahead of the two sides’ meeting in the Championship on Sunday.
Garry Monk will return to Elland Road for the first time since walking out on the Whites in May with his new Boro side and ex-Riverside star Slaven has explained why he thinks the ex-Swansea boss wanted to leave.
Orta moved to Leeds from Middlesbrough as part of Andrea Radrizzani’s reshuffle of the senior staff at Elland Road and Slaven has pointed the finger at the Spaniard for being a large part as to why the Riverside club was relegated from the Premier League last season.
The former Ireland striker claims that not many of Orta’s signings have actually done well and that could be a large factor in why Monk walked out.
“No doubt he would be happy to take the praise if Leeds do well so he has to be prepared to take stick if the team isn’t performing,” he said on Gazette Live.
“The buck stops with him. And if he’s calling the shots, rather than head coach Thomas Christiansen, you can understand why Monk didn’t want work in that sort of environment.
He added: “But the proof of the pudding is in the eating and how many of his signings came good?
“Not many, I would say.
“The January window was an absolute disaster. We were the lowest scoring team in the league so what did we do? We signed two strikers who had little or no Premier League experience and Adlene Guedioura. I rest my case.”
Leeds enjoyed a good start to the season but as soon as that started to unfold it became clear to many fans and pundits that the summer signings weren’t cutting the mustard.
Kyle Bartley, Charlie Taylor and Chris Wood have not been replaced adequately with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Matthew Pennington and Pierre-Michel Lasogga coming in over the summer.
As a result, Leeds have won just one of their last seven Championship matches and a defeat to Boro on Sunday is likely to heap a truck load of pressure on Christiansen.
In other Leeds United news, fans have urged Christiansen to recall this loanee after firing on all cylinders on Saturday.
