Gareth Bale’s agent already has an eye on where the Tottenham winger will end up next season, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England full-back called on the Welshman to show “desire” to get back to his best and claimed he can be “sensational” again in a Spurs shirt.
Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett told Financial Times’ Business of Football event last Wednesday, as relayed by Sky Sports, that his client’s career was coming to an end.
Since then the 31-year-old has put in arguably two of his best performances in a Spurs shirt in his second spell with substitute appearances against West Ham and Wolfsberger.
Asked whether the four-time Champions League winner could have been motivated by his agent’s comments, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Sometimes an agent is looking to justify why he hasn’t quite performed and how he can justify a move a little bit further down the line at the end of the season.
“There’s all sorts going on in that situation and scenario. He’s been sensational and he’s got nothing to prove to anybody, but himself.
“If he wants to get back to his best he’s just got to work incredibly hard, he’ll need a little bit of luck along the way but it comes down to hard work, desire and sacrifice.
“If he’s prepared to do that, then there’s no reason why we can’t see the old Gareth Bale but you have to start looking at it and think.
“Everyone thought there was a personal issue between him and Zidane [at Real Madrid] and that’s why he wasn’t playing.
“But now he moves back to Tottenham everyone thought it was going to be rosy again and it’s not. We haven’t seen the old Gareth Bale and those performances.
“So was it 90 per cent Zidane’s fault as everyone thought or is there more of an issue with Gareth Bale himself?”
