Mills: Benitez's 'shrewd' Everton plan may 'keep fans onside' after major update
Rafa Benitez wants to keep Duncan Ferguson at Everton if he becomes the new manager to keep the fans onside, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender claimed keeping the Toffees legend on his coaching staff would be a “shrewd move”.
Football Insider learned on June 17 Ferguson will be offered a key role on Benitez’s prospective backroom staff.
However, Football Insider revealed today (19 June) the Spaniard has been advised to snub the job and wait for the Newcastle United takeover to be completed so he can replace Steve Bruce.
He is getting cold feet after the overwhelmingly negative reaction to his potential appointment from the Everton fan base.
But Mills has claimed keeping Ferguson on board could help smooth the transition.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “First and foremost, that keeps the fans onside.
“Maybe that will help smooth over and integrate that slightly bumpy process of an ex-Liverpool manager coming in to manage Everton.
“That would be a shrewd move, I would suggest.
“Rafa’s not daft. He’s still got a house and family that live in the area. He knows what the passions like in the area.
“He will probably be under more scrutiny than any other job because of those connections to Liverpool in the past.”
Everton have been without a manager since Carlo Ancelotti quit the post to return to Real Madrid at the beginning of the month.
He guided them to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League last term.
