Rafael Benitez has been advised to snub Everton and wait for the Newcastle United job instead, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Spaniard, 61, reached an agreement with Everton on Wednesday night and was expected to be appointed on Thursday after being offered the post.

But Benitez is getting cold feet due to the protests from Blues fans at him taking over from Carlo Ancelotti.

An industry source has told Football Insider that close allies of the former Liverpool and Newcastle boss have advised him to reject Everton's offer.

They believe Benitez would be far better off biding his time for a sensational return to St James' Park.

The latest situation is all parties are confident the Premier League will sanction the £300million PiF takeover after arbitration proceedings in July.

That would open the door for Benitez to make a sensational return to a club where he is adored by a significant majority of the supporters.

By contrast, he would not be so well received at Everton.

Benitez managed Liverpool for six years, led them to the Champions League in 2005 and called his would-be employers a “small club” after a Merseyside derby in February 2007.

Benitez last managed in the Premier League at Newcastle before moving in 2019 to China for a spell at Dalian Professional.

He has been back in England since leaving China in January and has been linked with a number of high-profile posts this summer.
