Mills can't believe Howe latest after Newcastle source update today

Danny Mills has admitted he is surprised Newcastle United are set to give Eddie Howe the task of keeping them up this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Middlesbrough and England full-back pointed to the poor defensive record of Howe’s Bournemouth side as a reason why he may not be the right man for Newcastle.

Football Insider broke the news late on Wednesday morning (November 3) they are in advanced negotiations with Howe and are confident of appointing him.

They moved quickly for the 43-year-old after a deal to appoint Villareal boss Unai Emery collapsed earlier that day.

A source updated yesterday (November 4) to tell this site three players – Callum Wilson, Matt Ritchie and Ryan Fraser, who were all managed by the Englishman at Bournemouth – have given ringing endorsements of his credentials to the board.

“He didn’t do great for Bournemouth by the end, it didn’t quite work out,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“It’s going to be tough, it’s difficult. They played nice football at Bournemouth but is he the man to get them to mid-table playing decent football? Probably.

“Is he the man to help them survive? Phwoar, I don’t know. I’m not 100 per cent sure convinced by that.

“That will be an interesting one to see how it works out. Is Eddie Howe the right man for survival? I’ll take some convincing.

“They [Bournemouth] went down because they didn’t have a solid defence. His last job was relegation. Are you going to put the job of staying up on someone who’s just been relegated?”
