Wood 'doing cartwheels up M62' as Newcastle set sights on another striker signing - Mills
Chris Wood travelled up the M62 “doing cartwheels” to sign for Newcastle United, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Middlesbrough and England defender claimed Newcastle signing Wood was “desperate”.
The club announced on Thursday (13 January) the striker has arrived from Burnley after they triggered his release clause.
The New Zealand international has penned a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Toon.
A club source told Football Insider yesterday (12 January) they have now set their sights on signing a second striker most likely on loan.
“I think Wood is a desperate signing, that’s the only way I can see it,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They’ve looked at it and thought ‘We have to get some goals from somewhere, how are we going to do that?’
“Playing expansive football is not going to work, they’re going to get beaten. It might be a change of tack, get the ball wide and into the box for Wood.
“He must be doing somersaults, he must have been doing cartwheels up the M62 and onto the A1.
“It’s an unbelievable move for him at his age, it’s absolutely fantastic.
“But it’s a desperation signing, Newcastle may have to change their principles and Eddie Howe may have to change the way he wants to play.
“Realistically, he had 18 months to go at Burnley. I’m guessing it was one of those release clauses that was £30million last year and the year before it was £40million.
“His agent has been quite cute in putting that in thinking ‘Nobody’s going to pay £25million when he’s 30’. Ordinarily,, you’d be right but Newcastle have got cash and are desperate.”
