Barnsley have rejected a £1million-plus bid from Millwall for the former Leeds United star Alex Mowatt, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The 25-year-old’s future at Oakwell is up in the air as he is out of contract in the summer and yet to commit to an extension.
This has led to plenty of Championship interest and this site revealed last week two mystery clubs had tabled offers for Mowatt.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Millwall have submitted a bid of between £1million and £1.2m for the goalscoring midfielder.
Barnsley have set an asking price of £1.2-£1.5m for one of their prize assets.
Tykes boss Valerien Ismael told the Yorkshire Post earlier this month that the most “important deal” the club could do in January would be to secure Mowatt to a new contract.
He added: “I am sure we will try everything to keep Alex. Alex is the face of the team and the club and the captain of the team. We are working on it.”
Mowatt has been a star player for Barnsley since signing from boyhood club Leeds in January 2017.
He has started 23 of their 24 Championship matches this season and missed out only due to a positive Covid-19 test.
Mowatt has scored four goals from central midfield this season and has played 137 times in total for Barnsley.
Barnsley have been one of the surprise packages in this season’s Championship after narrowly avoiding relegation last term.
They have thrived since Gerhard Struber quitting for New York Red Bulls in October and are 10th in the table.
In other news, Football Insider has been told by Paul Robinson he is desperate for top West Brom target to sign for Leeds United after big development.
