Celtic star performances betray stats, Rodgers comments prove all is not well
The fact that Brendan Rodgers, as quoted by the Evening Times, has had to come out and defend Scott Sinclair’s performances so far this season during Celtic’s winter break shows that all is not well the winger.
The stats would say otherwise, as Sinclair is well on his way to match the 25 goals he scored last season when he was deservedly named Scottish player of the year, he has 15 goals this season.
But the Celtic stars’ performances have betrayed the statistics, as shown in the recent goalless draw in the Old Firm derby, where the ex-Man City winger was almost timid with his finishing, particularly when he sidefooted an effort wide of goal when it looked easier to score.
Perhaps if Jonny Hayes hadn’t suffered a season-ending leg-break then Sinclair, who has been a mainstay in the team since Brendan Rodgers took over at the Bhoys, would be on the bench.
But with Patrick Roberts set to return then perhaps for a spell he should join the in-form James Forrest on the wings, with Sinclair dropping out.
A break could do Sinclair a lot of good, as he has been playing almost non-stop since July and it is starting to show in his performances.
Rodgers should bring him back into the side for the Europa League last 32 clash with Zenit in February, where a refreshed Scott Sinclair could make the difference in if the Bhoys qualify for the next round.
