Newcastle have offered Aleksandar Mitrovic to French side Olympique Lyonnais for £16million, according to a report.
French football news website Foot Mercato claim that the Magpies are looking to offload the Serbian international after failing to impress in his two years with the club, and have began to offer the powerful forward to other sides.
During his time on Tyneside, he has managed to net just 15 times in 65 appearances, with just four of those strikes coming during last season’s Championship campaign.
The 22-year-old, who has 27 caps under his belt for Serbia, is said be looking for a contract worth around £26,000-a-month (€29,000-a-month) in net earnings, with an income tax rate of 45 per cent placed on earnings over £2,573-a-month (€151,261-a-month)
Newcastle currently have Dwight Gayle, Daryl Murphy and Ayoze Perez as Mitrovic’s competitors for a place up top in the starting XI.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle are short of Premier League options up front, with none of their current options having proven the ability to be clinical in the top flight. It will no doubt be a concern hanging over manager Rafael Benitez, but he cannot let his talent go without having a suitable alternative lined up. That being said, if Newcastle could pick up £16million for Mitrovic, it would be a real boost to their transfer budget, and would allow them to pursue the talent which would help fire them to safety in the Premier League. His departure would not be taken well by the Toon Army however, with the Serbian having established himself as a cult figure at the club. Either way, it is a difficult situation for the Magpies to manage.
In other Newcastle news, this 22-year-old winger is on the verge of securing a deal to the club.
