Aston Villa and Newcastle fans react on Twitter to Lescott reportedly training with Sunderland

By Amir Mir

Joleon Lescott is training with Sunderland – and Newcastle and Aston Villa fans on Twitter have seen the funny side.

Sky Sports’ north-east reporter Keith Downie reported on his personal Twitter account that the former Villa centre-back is training with the struggling Premier League outfit.

The 34-year-old left Villa in the summer after being part of their humiliating relegation to the Championship.

Newcastle supporters on social media could not believe their north-east rivals were signing a player who was part of such a wretched Villa campaign last term.

After leaving Villa, Lescott signed for Greek side AEK Athens, but the former England international left the club after just three months.

Both sets of fans were amused by the story as they believe the club will be going down if manager David Moyes decides to sign up the free agent.

The Black Cats are currently 19th in the Premier League table, one point behind 17th-placed Crystal Palace, but only sitting a place above rock-bottom Swansea on goal difference.

One Villa fans asked whether Lescott is on a relegation tour following his wretched run with the Midlands side.

Overall, both sets of fans could not help but laugh at the possibility that Lescott could be joining Sunderland.
