Kevin Campbell has backed Newcastle United signing Joe Willock permanently from Arsenal at the end of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker heaped praise on the 21-year-old and claimed he has got “legendary status” on Tyneside already.

Willock has impressed since moving to St. James’ Park on loan in January and has scored four goals in 10 appearances.

Football Insider understands Willock has told his Newcastle teammates that he wants to stay at the club next season.

The two clubs held talks over a second loan spell when the first was negotiated in January but nothing was formally agreed.

When asked by Football Insider if Mikel Arteta would regret letting Willock leave permanently, Campbell said: “I don’t think it would be a mistake to let him go.

“He has got legendary status already in Newcastle because he has already scored some really big goals for them.

“It is important for a player like him to play games, score goals and make a difference. That is what he has done up there.

“Fair play to the young man for making the move and then taking his opportunity. Can I see him playing for Arsenal? I do not think the chance is there anymore.

“He has got a God-like status at that football club which is great. Why would he not want to stay there next season?”
