Newcastle United are looking to broker a deal between themselves and Liverpool for the signing of the Reds striker Daniel Sturridge, according to a report, and Benitez must do everything in his power to make it happen.
The Newcastle Chronicle believes that the Magpies want to tie up a loan move for the forward before the transfer window closes, as manager Rafa Benitez looks to bolster his attacking options.
It is thought that the Spanish boss has grown frustrated in his attempts to sign Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen and has switched this attention to the Liverpool forward instead.
And what a coup this would be for the north-east giants as they bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
In Sturridge, they would be getting a proven goalscorer, one who could fire them away from the dreaded drop and a player who is keen to get back into Gareth Southgate’s England side ready for the summer’s World Cup in Russia.
The Liverpool forward, who had been linked with a move to Sevilla, has struggled to get a look-in under Jurgen Klopp’s reign and has grown increasingly frustrated at his lack of opportunities at the club.
Newcastle’s current crop of attackers have failed to set the Premier League alight this season and an inability to find the back of the net when chances have presented themselves has seen the club fall to just one point above the bottom three.
However, if the England international can keep himself fit then he will be the saviour at St James’ Park this season.
And it could be Benitez’ close links with Liverpool that push the deal through with just days to go.
