Newcastle ‘capable’ of triggering £70m Luis Suarez release clause as Sporting stance clear
Newcastle United have the financial muscle to meet the £70million release clause for Sporting CP striker Luis Suarez this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Magpies are huge admirers of the 28-year-old hitman, and could look to offload some of their current attacking options in order to make a big-money swoop even more achievable.
The Colombian is attracting plenty of attention after a season that has seen him hit 36 goals in all competitions, but sources say that Sporting are “relaxed” over his future and have little intention of entertaining a cut-price sale.
Newcastle are aware of the fact that it will be “difficult” to strike a deal for Suarez ahead of next season, but he is one of a number of top frontmen who are on their radar at the moment, and they are “capable” of paying the fee.
Eddie Howe wants to add a new striker to his group to his strengthen his hand ahead of next season, and Suarez could yet become that man.

Suarez only joined Sporting last summer, after a goal-laden season in the Spanish second tier saw him fire home 27 league goals for Almeria in 2024-25.
He has since wasted no time in making his mark at Sporting, as he currently sits at the top of the goalscoring charts in the Portuguese top flight, having matched his league total from last season with one game to spare.

The former Marseille man’s meteoric rise is now seeing him linked with some of the Premier League’s top clubs, but Newcastle have a key issue that they must overcome if they want to secure his services.
Suarez is understood to be happy and settled in Lisbon and is also keen to continue playing Champions League football, which would not be on offer to him on Tyneside.
That currently presents a major stumbling block for any potential deal, and it is one that must be overcome if Newcastle are to progress their interest at all in the coming months.
Sporting are currently on course to earn a place in qualifying for Europe’s premier club competition, and are adamant that Suarez will only leave the club if his release clause is paid in full.
Bayern Munich move is the ‘right solution’ for Anthony Gordon
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider earlier this week that Newcastle selling Anthony Gordon to Bayern Munich would be the “right solution” for all parties.
The winger has already agreed personal terms with the German champions, and the Magpies could stand to make as much as £75m from a deal ahead of next season.
The Tynesiders have fought hard to keep the England international in recent years, but Wyness now feels that it is almost inevitable that Gordon moves to Germany.
Newcastle would net an eye-watering sum if that move does come to fruition, which in turn would provide them with even greater resources to potentially target Suarez.
Gordon has been hugely influential at St James’ Park in recent years, and the club have done everything they can to try to keep him.
