Newcastle clearly planning for life without Sandro Tonali as record-move for ‘diamond’ eyed

Newcastle United are among three Premier League clubs reportedly exploring a potential deal for FC Porto starlet Victor Froholdt.

The Dane joined the Portuguese champions from Copenhagen for a fee in the region of £19million last summer and has been hugely impressive this season.

The 20-year-old has scored six goals and provided six assists in 31 Liga Portugal matches this season, and has played almost every league minute for Franceso Farioli.

The Magpies are set to be on the market for central midfielders this summer, especially if Sandro Tonali agrees a departure.

Newcastle transfer chiefs are bracing for offers for the Italian, who has indicated his willingness to leave St James’ Park.

Newcastle consider Victor Froholdt move amid Sandro Tonali links

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Newcastle are eyeing several midfielders amid mounting interest in Tonali.

The Italy international has been superb for much of this season despite the Magpies’ troubles, but the lack of European football could be critical for his future.

Save for a dramatic twist, Eddie Howe’s team look set to go without even the Conference League next season after a dismal campaign.

And with Tonali missing out on the World Cup as well, the 25-year-old is likely keen to make sure years of his career are not wasted.

Arsenal are among the teams to explore a move for the former AC Milan midfielder, who will have two years remaining on his contract this summer.

Should he leave, Bold reports that Newcastle are among the teams keeping a close eye on Porto midfielder Froholdt.

The 20-year-old is extremely highly rated and has enjoyed a superb debut season in Portugal, winning Liga Portugal last week.

Froholdt is under contract until 2030, but does have a release clause in his contract worth around £73m.

Andre Villas-Boas on ‘diamond’ Froholdt

Froholdt, who has already been handed 10 caps for the Denmark international side, was named the 2025 footballer of the year by the Danish football association, following in the footsteps of the likes of Christian Eriksen and Kasper Schmeichel.

It has been an extraordinary breakthrough for the 20-year-old, who could well be set to make another huge move this summer.

Speaking in January, former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas, who is now president of Porto, said: “It was a difficult deal because FC Copenhagen knew they had a diamond.

“We were in long negotiations with FC Copenhagen, and there were also other interested clubs trying to sign Victor.

“The combination of us being the first to approach him and the conversations with the family to convince him of the Porto project was important in his decision-making process.”

“Staying at Porto for a few seasons and winning some trophies will be good for his development,” Villas-Boas added. “Victor has already changed – he has developed from the Victor we brought in from Copenhagen.

“He is already showing signs that he can become a great player. If he continues that development, he can become one of the best.”
