Newcastle could seal 'great appointment' after what pundit's heard about Wilcox

Newcastle United could have “a big problem” on their hands if a new manager is appointed before a sporting director.

That is the view of former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Tyneside club’s interest in Man City academy director Jason Wilcox, 50.

The Premier League confirmed on Thursday that a PIF-backed takeover of Newcastle from Mike Ashley had been successful.

As revealed by Football Insider (October 8th), the consortium plan to shake up the club’s recruitment set up.

According to The Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace (October 7th), ex-Blackburn player Jason Wilcox is being considered for a director of football role.

When asked by Football Insider for his insight on Wilcox and the creation of a sporting director at St. James’, Phillips said:

“They need to get a sporting director in first. If you bring in a manager then a sporting director you can have a big problem straight away. They may not see eye to eye.

“I think they should get a sporting director in first and then allow him to help in the appointment of a new manager. It is important to sort that out before. It makes a lot more sense to do it that way round in my opinion.

“I played against Jason Wilcox and I have heard good things about him from other people. I think he would be a great appointment.”
