Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that both Rolando Aarons and Freddie Woodman look set for temporary exits before Wednesday’s deadline after holding transfer talks.

The young duo have both been on the fringes of the Magpies’ first team this season, with the winger making five appearances and the goalkeeper just one across all competitions.

It has been a quiet transfer window for Benitez so far, with just one new face through the door in the shape of a loan for Chelsea’s Kenedy, while there have been no exits, either permanently or temporarily, from the senior squad.

However the Spanish boss suggests that is likely to change with less than a week left of the transfer window left, revealing that talks have been held over Aarons’ departure, including a team making an offer for his signing, while Woodman is also up for a loan exit.

He told the Chronicle: “One that maybe now has more chance to leave is Rolando Aarons.

“I was talking with him and he was saying that we were bringing in another player and asking if maybe he could go.

“[It would be a] loan. But we need to have the right team for him. We had one good option, but now we have to wait and then we are waiting for any other options.

“(Woodman’s departure) On loan, obviously. We want to keep Freddie [long term].

“We need to decide about that with the options that we have. We have to think about that.”

Woodman, who was a star performer for England’s under-20 side during their World Cup winning campaign, made his debut for the Magpies in the 3-1 win over Luton Town in the FA Cup, in what is his only appearance to date.

Aarons meanwhile has 27 outings under his belt for the club, scoring four goals and chipping in with three assists since breaking through the youth ranks.
