Newcastle have told new arrival Jacob Murphy that they will continue to keep an eye on the progress of his twin brother Josh at Norwich City, according to a report.
The Mirror claim on their website that both of the Murphy brothers have been viewed as potential signings by the Magpies, and after capturing one of the 22-year-old attackers from the Canaries, they will potentially make a move for the other in 2018.
Jacob arrived for a reported £12.5million at Newcastle last week, having grown up a supporter of the North East side as a result of family ties to the region.
Like his brother, Josh is a versatile winger able to operate on either flank, and is a graduate of the Canaries’ youth ranks, having broken into the first team back in 2013.
Last season saw him start on the bench but as the season progressed, he found more and for first team action, both as a substitute and in the starting XI, hitting home 10 goals and providing nine assists for his side.
Football Insider verdict
Josh and Jacob are identical twins, so playing together will have proved a nightmare for fans, commentators and even possibly the management team at Norwich. Whether they continue to confuse spectators and defences at St James’ Park will be another matter. Newcastle’s new signing will be able to give the inside information on their pursuit of his brother, listing his strengths, weaknesses and even Josh’s view towards a potential transfer. However, making the step up from the Championship to the Premier League is a big ask, and not every player can demonstrate the same quality as they do in the second tier. The Magpies will have been keeping a close eye on him during their scouting missions, and the fact they have not made a move this summer indicates they believe Jacob to be the more talented of the duo. Plus, Josh’s arrival would pose more competition for his brother, and so the Newcastle man may be secretly hoping they do not make a move.
