Newcastle United are eyeing up a potential swoop for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Kevin Trapp in the January transfer window, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim that the Magpies are interested in striking up a loan deal for Trapp, 27, as Rafa Benitez looks to bolster his defence ahead of the second half of the Premier League season.
It is understood that Benitez has his eye on a number of goalkeeper options including Joe Hart, who is on loan at West Ham from Manchester City, and Real Madrid’s Kika Casilla.
Trapp is the second choice goalkeeper at PSG and has only made three appearances across all competitions this season.
The two-times Germany international has played in two of PSG’s most recent games but failed to keep clean sheets as he conceded three goals.
PSG are flying high at the top of Ligue 1 at the moment with a nine point gap to second-placed Monaco.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle were linked with a vast array of goalkeepers in the summer as Benitez looked to snap up a new No 1 for this season. However he failed to get anyone in to improve on his current options and he has since rotated between Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow. Trapp would definitely be an improvement on what is already on offer between the sticks at St James’ Park but the Germany international is likely to be on high wages at one of the world’s richest clubs, which means he may be reluctant to take a pay cut to move to Tyneside. The former Frankfurt goalkeeper is definitely the sort of quality that fans will want Benitez to be looking at though.
