Newcastle United fans have been left fuming on social media after owner Mike Ashley issued an official statement following the club’s final game of the Premier League season.

The Magpies left the supporters with a game to remember as the campaign came to a close, goals from Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez sending them and their team mates on the way to a 3-0 win over Chelsea and securing a top 10 finish in what was their first season back in the Premier League following promotion from the Championship 12 months ago.

As the dust settled on the season, Ashley, who is renowned for taking a back seat on footballing matters and generally remaining quiet in the background, released an official statement via the club’s official website, congratulating Rafael Benitez, the team and thanking the fans for their support.

However, despite confirming that he wants to keep the popular Spaniard in the dugout, the Toon Army were raging on Twitter over comments suggesting that he would give “every penny” that the club generate to Benitez to splash, with a similar promise made last summer, when the Magpies were among the lowest spenders in the top flight.
