'I hate life', 'Gonna cry' - Newcastle fans rage over missing star v Burnley

By Russell Edge

Newcastle United fans have turned to social media to react to news that midfielder Mikel Merino was left out of the squad for the clash against Burnley on Monday.

The club released the starting XI that Rafael Benitez selected via their official Twitter account, which revealed that the Spanish manager had made just one change to the side which beat Crystal Palace last weekend.

Isaac Hayden dropped to the bench with Mo Diame taking his place, while Dwight Gayle and Henri Saivet both returned among the substitutes, taking the place of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Merino.

The club stated on their Twitter account that the Spanish midfielder, and last week’s match winner, was missing due to a back injury, which is being looked at.

Supporters were less than happy to see the 21-year-old missing from the squad, and turned to Twitter to voice their anger.

Merino, who originally arrived on loan from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, has firmly become a fans’ favourite with his impressive performances in midfield, and the clash at Turf Moor will be the first league match he has missed all season.

He has already turned his temporary deal into a permanent one, signing a five-year deal on Tyneside, and his match winning header against Crystal Palace was his first goal for the club.
