Newcastle fans react to reported Benitez pursuit of £20m-rated goal and assist machine

Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Fulham playmaker Tom Cairney this summer – and Magpies fans agree he would be a great capture.

The Daily Mirror claim that the Magpies will push hard to land the 26-year-old once they have secured promotion back to the Premier League.

It is said that Premier League duo Bournemouth and Burnley have joined major Cairney fan, Rafael Benitez, in keeping close tabs on the attacking midfielder.

Newcastle have had a sustained interest in Cairney, 26, who has been one of the outstanding players in the Championship this season.

He has scored 11 goals and supplied 12 assists in 47 matches in all competitions for Fulham and been key to their stunning late promotion charge.

The Sunday Mirror reported last month that Fulham had slapped a £20million price tag on the Scotland international, who has a contract that runs until 2019 with an option for a further 12 months.

Newcastle fans are virtually united in their belief that Cairney would be a superb addition to Benitez’s squad but were dubious about the London club’s willingness to sell a prize asset to them.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Newcastle will secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt if they beat Preston at St James’ Park on Monday night.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the club have been installed the favourites to sign a 25-goal Premier League striker.
