Odds tumble: Newcastle installed favourites to sign 25-goal PL striker

By Russell Edge

Newcastle have been installed as favourites to sign Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

As reported by Football InsiderBet Victor had placed Aston Villa joint favourites with Middlesbrough to land the on-loan Bristol City player at 4/1, with Newcastle back at 8/1.

But there has been a dramatic shift in odds in the last 24 hours, with betting company Ladbrokes pricing the Magpies at 3/1 to be named Abraham’s next club, putting them ahead of Premier League sides Stoke (4/1), Bournemouth and West Brom (both 9/2).

The 19-year-old, who is on loan at City from Premier League title hopefuls Chelsea, has scored 25 goals in all competitions for the Robins this season, including an impressive 22 league goals to put himself as joint second top scorer, alongside Brighton’s Glenn Murray and Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle.

With Chelsea unlikely to offer Abraham first team football next season, he could find himself on loan yet again, and it is Gayle’s Newcastle who have been made favourites to secure the striker on either a loan or permanent deal.

With Premier League football on the horizon for Rafa Benitez’s side, the club are looking to invest to ensure their Premier League survival.

Football Insider verdict:

If Newcastle are looking at Championship strikers to step up to the Premier League, then they should look no further than Abraham. The 19-year-old has been imperious for a Bristol City side fighting relegation, and at such a young age, he is only bound to improve. He would offer great competition to Newcastle’s Gayle, who has scored the same number of league goals as Abraham at the time of writing. However, would Rafa Benitez be willing to accept the loan deal Chelsea are likely to look for, or would he be looking at making it a permanent move? A potential stumbling block, but the Magpies should push for a striker who is only going to get better with age.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies are close to sealing a deal for a 19-year-old Everton defender.
