Newcastle United fans were left delighted with the performance of Jesus Gamez after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

Jamaal Lascelles’ second-half goal gave the Magpies their second win in-a-row but it was the performance of make-shift left-back Gamez who earned a lot of the plaudits after the game.

The 32-year-old is naturally a right-back but was called into action on the opposite side of the back four due to injuries to Paul Dummett and Chancel Mbemba.

Gamez was signed up by Rafa Benitez last summer from Atletico Madrid but injury plagued his first season a St. James’ Park as he only managed to earn seven appearances across all competitions while also finding himself behind DeAndre Yedlin in the right-back pecking order.

On Sunday, the Spanish defender was drafted into the team to earn his first Premier League appearance and he looked nowhere near out of his depth in what was a solid showing by the Magpies.

Fans were particularly impressed with Games and took to Twitter after the game to share their views on his performance.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Newcastle have been short of options at left-back for most of the season with Paul Dummett the only recognised player able to play in that position who features in Benitez’s plans.

In other Newcastle United news, fans raged after this player was dropped from the team to play Swansea.
