Newcastle's season lurched deeper into disaster with a shock defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup at St James' Park.

Striker Aleksandar Mitrovic put the home team ahead in just the third minute of the game, with a powerful right-footed shot from the centre of the box.

It was a fantastic start for the Serbian striker in front of the Newcastle fans, but he couldn't kick on and find a second.

Instead fans had to watch as Championship club Nottingham Forest scored two in two minutes to take a shock lead.

Rolando Aarons equalised before half-time and that was how the game ended, with the tie taken into extra time.

There, Nottingham Forest's Tyler Walker found the winner and avoided the pain of penalties, plunging the Toon faithful into yet more despair.

One player they still found time to praise though was Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is currently fighting for his Newcastle future.

Manager Rafa Benitez doesn't seem to rate him enough to start him regularly, but the Toot fans love him even if he couldn't fire them into the third round of the cup tonight.

Here is a selection of their reactions on Twitter:
