'We've given up', 'Pointless' - Newcastle fans rage over Sky Sports' powerhouse hunt update
Newcastle United fans have taken to social media to rage over a Sky Sports report that the club are pursuing a move for Manchester City centre back Eliaquim Mangala.
The broadcaster’s north east reporter Keith Downie has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Magpies have made an approach to the Premier League table toppers over a potential swoop for the defensive powerhouse, with City said to be open to getting rid of the 26-year-old.
Understand Newcastle have made an enquiry to Manchester City over the availability of Eliaquim Mangala.
However any bid/agreement is unlikely unless City reduce their asking price. City keen to offload.— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) January 30, 2018
However, despite his international credentials, having picked up eight caps for the French national team, Newcastle fans were less than impressed with the report, turning to Twitter to insist that his capture would be a waste of time and that the Magpies are in desperate need of reinforcements at the other end of the pitch.
Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:

Guessing we’ve given up on scoring goals for the remainder of the season then…

We needed a striker, No.10 and a GK. not another centre half! Not that it’ll happen anyway with Lee Charnley in charge of transfers #Muppet pic.twitter.com/s1Lr1dB0dY

Seems pointless, our defence is okay and mangala has looked poor with top quality defenders next to him. Save the money and spend the extra on a striker

Mangala has struggled for game time at the Etihad Stadium this season, and has just 15 appearances to his name across all competitions, 10 of those coming among the starting XI.
Newcastle have had a quiet January transfer window in terms of both players arriving at St James’ Park, with Chelsea loanee Kenedy the only signing to date, as well as offloading any senior stars, with a handful of reserve players the only exits.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, an international hitman has been named at evens to secure a transfer move this month.
