Newcastle Untied are holding talks with Belgian club Anderlecht about selling them defender Chancel Mbemba, according to a reliable journalist.
Reporter Lee Ryder claimed on the Chronicle’s live transfer blog (12:36pm, Saturday) that the centre-back is likely to be offloaded this summer if the Magpies receive the right price for him.
The 23-year-old has been on the fringes of Rafael Benitez’s squad and managed just 11 senior appearances across all competitions this season.
He is now being lined up for a return to his former club Anderlecht with talks ongoing and could be set for a St James’ Park departure.
Football lnsdier verdict:
Mbemba is a 42-time capped Congo international with a lot of potential, but shipping him out this summer does make sense. He is a versatile defender that can fill in at either centre-back or left-back and has shown he is a huge physical presence. However, he has been unable to really cement his spot in the starting XI during his three-year stay with the club for an extended period of time. He is likely to enjoy much more regular game-time for Belgian giants Anderlecht and aged 23 he still has a bright future ahead of him. It will also help Newcastle to get the enforcer off the wage bill and allow them to potentially invest that money elsewhere. Newcastle’s defence was their strong point this season, but perhaps more finances need to be injected into improving the final third of the pitch. The aim has to be establishing the club back in the Premier League and having a more balanced and competitive squad will help massively.
In the latest Newcastle United transfer news, the club’s supporters are thrilled with reported interest in defender.
