Report: Goal machine on Newcastle radar, £15m will seal January deal

By Harry Sykes

Newcastle can push through a January deal for Brentford striker Scott Hogan if they meet the £15million asking price, according to a report.

The Chronicle claim the Championship goal machine is “certainly on the radar” of the Magpies as they eye up attacking reinforcements in the second half of the season.

Hogan has been linked with a January departure from the Bees amid reported interest from Aston Villa, West Ham, Reading, Norwich and Swansea.

It is said that Brentford have slapped a £15million price tag on the head of Hogan in a bid to maximise the fee they receive if he leaves next month.

The striker, who can also play out wide, has 18 months remaining on his contract with the Bees, which means the Championship minnows have such leverage in negotiations.

Newcastle are the wealthiest club in the second tier but the valuation could be an issue, although Rafael Benitez will be keen to strengthen a side that are still regarded as promotion favourites.

Hogan, 24, is the third leading scorer in the Championship with 13 goals from 23 matches this season, placing him behind only Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle (17) and Brighton’s Glenn Murray (15) in the league’s marksmen charts.

Hogan joined Brentford from Rochdale in the summer of 2014 and has an outstanding Championship record of 20 goals from 31 matches.

He missed much of the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons with serious knee injuries.

Newcastle lost to Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day and have dropped to second in the league but they are hoping to get back on track when they host Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park on Friday night.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the club are leading the chase to signing a Premier League sensation.
