Newcastle United should blow Premier League relegation rivals West Ham out the water in January to secure the services of a perfect winter signing in the shape of Borussia Dortmund forward Andre Schurrle.

The Guardian has claimed that the Hammers are keen on snapping up the former Chelsea man on a short term transfer deal in the upcoming window, but it should be Newcastle, not London, where the 27-year-old ends up in the new year.

It is said the 57-time-capped international hot shot, who has 22 goals for Germany, is seeking regular playing time ahead of the 2018 World Cup in order to tie down a spot in his country’s squad for the finals.

However he has not been given the opportunity at current club Dortmund, with just eight appearances under his belt this season as a result of injuries and falling out of favour with the Bundesliga side.

As such, Rafael Benitez should go through his vast array of contacts to try and secure a temporary deal for the versatile forward, who could prove to be the perfect signing for the Magpies in the second half of the season.

The Spanish boss is desperate for more firepower up front, with Dwight Gayle, Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic all failing to find the goal trail so far, but with severely limited funds at his disposal, he could well be limited to loan moves and bargain basement captures.

What they really need is proven Premier League talent, which comes at a price, but luckily for the Magpies Schurrle could offer them just that for a significantly reduced cost, with 44 Premier League appearances under his belt.

His versatility, able to play on the flanks as well as in a centre forward’s role, would be an added bonus to Benitez as he looks to rotate his squad when necessary, and is the sort of signing Newcastle must be looking to make if they want to secure their place in the top flight.
