Newcastle United have been named among the favourites to secure the services of Everton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, according to a report.
Betting website smartbets.com state that betting agency BetVictor have placed odds of 6/1 for the French enforcer to join the Magpies, level with fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and West Ham, and ahead of West Brom (10/1).
However the 15-time-capped French international is favourite to leave for any side in his home country, with odds of 4/1 offered for the former Southampton and Manchester United man to join any side in France.
The 27-year-old had started the season in the Toffees’ starting line up, with 15 appearances under his belt across all competitions, but has recently seen himself fall out of the XI, having been left out of the squad altogether in two of the club’s last three league matches.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle have demonstrated at times this season that they are lacking a presence in the middle of the park, with only Isaac Hayden the recognised defensive midfielder in the squad. Schneiderlin is an experienced top flight star and would bring something different to the squad, plus his game time in the Premier League may be what Rafa Benitez needs to sort his side out. While a midfielder probably is not the priority, if they were presented with the chance to sign him it should be a no brainer. However, wages might prove to be a real stumbling block, and with Arsenal and West Ham looking like potential suitors, it could prove to be too expensive a deal.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are eyeing a loan move for a proven top flight striker this January.
