Newcastle reach emphatic decision over £15m-rated defender - report

By Derek Smithson

Newcastle do not plan to pursue a move for Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs, according to a report.

ESPN FC claim that the Magpies are not planning an attempt to sign the 27-year-old contrary to speculation.

The Daily Mirror have reported that Rafael Benitez’s side are eyeing a move for Gunners left-back Gibbs and will have to pay £15million to secure his signature.

However, ESPN FC state that Newcastle are not interested in the full-back and have other transfer targets.

Gibbs is entering his final year at the Emirates Stadium and was the second-choice left-back last season.

The 10-time capped England International fell behind Nacho Monreal in the pecking order and made just 22 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with five assists.

Benitez is set to improve his squad at St James’ Park over the summer as he prepares for a return to the Premier League

Paul Dummett was an ever-present at left-back last season and it appears that Gibbs won’t be providing him competition next season.

Football Insider verdict:

Newcastle may be smart in avoiding Gibbs as the £15million asking price is definitely too steep. The defender has been unable to cement his position in the starting line-up and Arsenal fans always feel he struggles on the defensive side of his game. However, the Magpies certainly need players with Premier League experience in the summer and Gibbs has that in abundance. They should reconsider a move if they can lower the transfer fee and should have some leverage with the defender’s deal expiring next summer. Gibbs could struggle for regular first team action at the Emirates Stadium next year and would be much better served battling Dummett for a starting spot.
