Newcastle set for Jan transfer scrap with title favourites over dazzling attacker - report

Newcastle United are set for a transfer scrap with Celtic and Roma in January as they bid to land Chelsea attacker Charly Musonda on loan, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claims that the Magpies have joined the Scottish Premiership title favourites in the pursuit for Musonda, 21, as Amanda Staveley closes in on a £300million takeover at St. James’ Park.

It is understood that Chelsea will want the Belgium Under-21 international to earn as much first-team football as possible and due to Celtic’s spot in the Europa League knock-out rounds, they could be in pole position.

However Roma also prove to be a threat to Newcastle as the fact that they qualified for the Champions League last-16 could prove to be irresistible to Musonda, who has not long ago penned a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Dazzling attacker Musonda, who is known for his pace and quick feet, has only ever made five senior appearances for Chelsea.

Musonda is definitely the type of player that Newcastle could do with and he may well be someone who could go straight into Rafa Benitez’s first-team plans. Ayoze Perez has not been great this term and the attacking midfield position is certainly one that needs sorting out in January. It probably all hinges on the takeover though as Mike Ashley wasn’t able to splash the cash in the summer and may not be able to again if he is still in charge. Celtic on the other hand could do with Musonda after Tom Rogic’s injury. However Rodgers is liable to rotate his squad a lot and it could be that the Belgian attacker wouldn’t actually play as much.

In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies are clear favourites to sign this defender in January who is valued at £20million.
