Newcastle United are set to loan out midfielder Sean Longstaff with Portsmouth currently winning the race for his signature.
The Chronicle report that League One’s Portsmouth have assured the Magpies that the 20-year-old midfielder will get regular game time if loaned to them and this has seen them look like the youngster’s most likely destination.
It is believed that Longstaff will move to Pompey on a six-months loan deal but it’s unknown whether he will make the move at the start of pre-season or whether he will spend a week or two being assessed by Magpies manager Rafa Benitez.
According to the local newspaper, the highly-rated Magpies prospect is wanted by a host of Championship sides and that talks have been held with Rotherham United over a possible move.
Football Insider verdict:
Longstaff is one of the Magpies only youngsters who is consistently spoken about in high regards. The 20-year-old had an excellent 2017/18 campaign while on loan at Blackpool United as he featured 42 times for them. Longstaff being exposed to regular senior football is vital to his development and the Magpies must make the right decision about him this summer. With Portsmouth practically promising to play the midfielder if he joins them, then it seems like a smart decision by the Magpies. However Longstaff could do with playing for a Championship side sooner rather than later as clearly he will learn more and develop quicker. The only question is whether there are any clubs in England’s second-tier willing to match Portsmouth’s assurances about playing him. If Rotherham or another Championship team were willing to do that then the Magpies should send him there instead of allowing him to have another spell in League One.
