Newcastle willing to meet asking price of £90,000-a-week top-flight striker - report

By Danny Wright

Newcastle have held talks with Inter Milan over the possibility of signing former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic, according to a report.

The Newcastle Chronicle claims that Rafa Benitez is a fan of Jovetic, 27, and is willing to meet the £15million asking price that has been set by the Serie A side if they manage to offload a few more players over the coming days.

However it is understood that the Montenegro international’s wages could prove to be the biggest hurdle to overcome in any potential deal.

Jovetic is said to be earning £90,000-a-week in the Italin top-flight with Inter and that may be an issue for Newcastle, especially when Roma and Sevilla, who he spent last season on loan with, are willing to meet his wage demands.

With transfer deadline day now less than a week away, Newcastle are still pushing hard to offload a number of players that are deemed surplus to requirements by Benitez.

Football Insider Verdict

Jovetic has had a tough time trying to find the net in the last couple of seasons and he is yet another striker that Newcastle are linked with that is over-priced and out-of-form. However he could revive his goal scoring streak at St. James’ Park, as he has spent most of his career playing for teams that are challenging at the top end of the table. Maybe a decrease in pressure and expectation will see Jovetic start to find the net more regularly. If he does cost £15million and £90,000-a-week for his wages, it would be a monumental risk. But it’s getting to that stage where Benitez has to take these risky moves to try and complete his squad.

In other Newcastle news, the Magpies are also in the hunt for this Premier League striker who has over 70 international caps to his name.
