Newcastle in three-way race for proven PL performer with 74 international caps - report
By Danny Wright
Newcastle are one of three Premier League clubs in the race to sign Southampton striker Shane Long, according to a report.
The Times claims that Brighton and Crystal Palace are also keen on Long, 30, who has been struggling to earn a starting spot at St. Mary’s in recent months.
Long started just 10 Premier League fixtures last term and it seems that he is not in Mauricio Pellegrino’s immediate plans at the moment, having only featured off the bench this season.
The 74-times Republic of Ireland international is a proven performer in the top-flight, showing his skills in spells at West Brom, Hull and now at Southampton, where he has struggled to continue showcasing his high work-rate and aerial ability having dropped down the pecking order.
He has 46 goals in 239 Premier League appearances, where he has at times found himself more of a supporting striker or a winger, especially at Southampton.

Long isn’t the only striker that Newcastle are looking to sign at the moment with Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie claiming that the Magpies are in talks with Chelsea’s Loic Remy over a potential loan deal.
Football Insider Verdict
Long is a very underrated player in the Premier League and although his goal scoring record doesn’t show it, he is a striker that will always give 100 per cent and open up a host of chances for his team-mates to find the net. Not many people realise it but the Irish international is one of the best strikers in the Premier League at winning aerial duals. The ex-Reading striker has an incredible leap and he is perhaps a more effective target man that Aleksandar Mitrovic.
In other Newcastle news, the Magpies’ fire sale is expected to continue with another attacker set to leave by Sunday.
