Newcastle have tabled an offer for Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley, according to a report.

The Sun claim that the Championship big hitters have made a swoop for the 13-times England international, who has slipped down the pecking order at Goodison Park this season.

It is said that Rafael Benitez's team have lodged a loan bid for the 27-year-old in a bid to prise him from Everton for the second half of the season.

Manager Benitez is keen to strengthen a midfield which will not only be deprived of the suspended Jonjo Shelvey for another three matches but will also lose Mohamed Diame and Christian Atsu to the Africa Cup of Nations for the month of January.

Cleverley moved to Everton in the summer of 2015 on a free transfer after his contract had expired at Manchester United.

He was a regular last season under former boss Roberto Martinez but has struggled for game time since Ronald Koeman took over the reins in the summer.

Cleverley has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season but has completed just two Premier League matches and his total amount of action has been restricted to 516 minutes.
