Newcastle could be set to land Man City’s £40million flop Eliaquim Mangala on loan after Pep Guardiola signed Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, according to a report.
The Mirror claim that Laporte is on his way to the Etihad after Man City triggered the £57million release clause.
And that could have an immediate knock-on effect with Mangala heading to St James’ Park.
It is reported that Newcastle are in talks over a loan move for the rest of the season, with the 26-year-old not needed at the Etihad.
However, it is also reported that Man City would want Newcastle to pay the majority of the £80k-a-week wages.
Mangala spent the last season on loan to Valencia and a summer move to Crystal Palace collapsed leaving him in limbo.
He’s made nine Premier League appearances for Man City this season but it appears that Guardiola wants him off the books and is willing to jettison him in a dramatic late deal.
Football Insider verdict:
When the words £40m and Premier League are bandied about in connection with a Newcastle signing, you can understand fans getting excited. When they hear it’s for Mangala their enthusiasm may be dampened, although he would do a good job of shoring up the Newcastle defence. That’s not really the major problem though. Newcastle need goals and they need them now, and £80k-a-week on wages could be better spent elsewhere, especially with so little time left to pull a deal together. We don’t expect this to come off unless Man City will budge on the wages.
