Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of a second Arsenal rising star as they work on a deal for attacker Alfie Matthews, Football Insider has learned.

The Magpies announced today they had completed the capture of central midfielder Stan Flaherty from the London giants to add to the landmark Nabil Bentaleb deal earlier this week.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the club are also hopeful of reaching an agreement with Flaherty's youthful teammate at Arsenal, Matthews.

Like Flaherty was, Matthews one-and-a-half seasons into two-year scholarship deal at Arsenal.

Newcastle are keen to strengthen their Under-23s and Under-18s squads by enticing him on a scholarship.

Flaherty, who can play in the number 10 role as well as deeper in midfield, has signed after undergoing a trial at the north-east club.

It remains to be seen whether Matthews also has an extended period at St James' Park before putting pen to paper.

The teenager has been a regular for Arsenal Under-18s this season and has also made it to their highly competitive Under-23s side as well.

A versatile forward who can spearhead the attack or play in any of the three main roles behind the front man, Matthews has scored twice in seven starts among 10 appearances for Under-18s this season.
