Newcastle United could sign new Jonjo Shelvey as £30m transfer plot reported - pundit
Alex McLeish has suggested Newcastle United could replace Jonjo Shelvey with Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, also claimed the Spurs star could act as a “foil” for the 30-year-old if he remains at St James’ Park.
As reported by the Express (26 April), Newcastle are plotting a £30million raid to sign Hojbjerg, 26, as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his midfield.
Football Insider revealed back in February that Roma are plotting a move for the Denmark international and that Spurs value him at around £25million.
McLeish insisted Hojbjerg could prove a savvy signing for Newcastle as a replacement or counterpart for Shelvey.
Discussing a potential move for Hojbjerg, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You could see that working for Newcastle.

“At the same time, they have one or two kind of similar players there, don’t they? They’ve got a great passer in Jonjo Shelvey.
“That’s kind of his position, the kind of quarterback stuff. You would wonder if that was a replacement for him.
“Newcastle are in the process of rebuilding. I’m sure Hojbjerg could be a good foil for them, depending on what they do with Shelvey.
“It could release him to go and play in a more forward area. He likes to come back and hit the quarterback passes. He’s been very good at that over the years.”
Shelvey is contracted at Newcastle until 2023, meaning the Magpies may consider cashing in this summer.
He has played 19 times under Eddie Howe.
